Ultrasound
ULTRASOUND
The darker room makes reading the ultrasound screen easier, and helps your pet remain still Our ultrasound machine (ex human hospital) produces very high quality images. Ultrasound images are viewed on a monitor although hard copies can be printed out. A probe emitting ultrasonic waves is applied to shaved skin over the area of interest. Using the sound waves that bounce back from the organs, the machine is able to form an image of a virtual 'slice' through that organ. By moving and angling the probe, we gain information about the internal architecture of the organ in detail. This helps us to pick up unusual areas like tumors.

A hard copy of relevent scans is kept with your pet's records One big advantage of ultrasound is that we are viewing the organs in motion. We can watch the heart beating and measure how effectively it is functioning. Scanning for pregnancy is a very safe tool for assessing the presence and viability of unborn puppies. Their tiny beating hearts are very cute! Ultrasound is not useful to assess bone or air filled structures but fortunately radiographs do this well.

Next: Endoscopy
