Ear Diseases
The ear canal is essentially a continuation of the skin and ear swabs examined under the microscope will often reveal yeast and bacteria similar to those that cause skin disease. In most cases, eardrops are prescribed and the ears rechecked in 2 weeks to assess that treatment is complete. For very severe infections, we prefer to culture a swab of the ear to establish the most effective antibiotic treatment. Such ears may require flushing under general anaesthesia to allow the medication to be effective.
Ear mites are a less common cause of ear infection unless you happen to be a ferret. Top spot products are now available to treat ear mites. Grass seeds can be intensely irritating and harmful and may necessitate sedation to remove when the ear is tender.
Surgery may be required to manage severe recurrent ear disease.
