Ophthalmology – Eye Diseases
A squinting or discharging eye should be checked as soon as possible as prompt treatment allows for the best outcome. Conjunctivitis, ulcers, grass seeds, uveitis and glaucoma are some of the painful eye conditions that require urgent attention. The eye is examined with a torch in a darkened room. A lens is sometimes used to see into the back of the eye and to assess cataracts. Fluoroscene dye helps us to pick up corneal ulcers and a tonometer, which measures pressure in the eye, is used in the assessment of glaucoma and uveitis. Measurement of tear production is important for dogs with dry eyes. Cats may get watery eyes when affected with cat flu.
Veterinary eye specialists who visit Canberra from Sydney each month, help us with more difficult cases.
