Dermatology – Skin Diseases
Skin diseases are a common cause for a visit to the vet.
We start by taking a detailed history and carefully examining the skin and if appropriate, take skin scrapings and moist preps to look for microscopic mites (eg demodex canis, left), bacteria and yeast that may cause or contribute to the problem. Grass seeds, which burrow into the skin, are a bother in summer and need to be removed. Some skin diseases including allergies and immune mediated diseases require long-term management and can be frustrating to say the least. Allergy testing, skin biopsies and blood tests eg for thyroid levels may be required to find the primary problem.
